This CTE course provides an in-depth exploration of key concepts essential for a career in healthcare. Students will begin with an introduction to healthcare as well as healthcare roles and professional responsibilities, learning the foundational skills required to thrive in the field. Emphasis will be placed on effective communication, including cultural awareness, to enhance patient care in diverse settings. Students will examine wellness practices, safety protocols, and emergency preparedness to promote health and prevent harm. The course will also cover essential medical mathematics, terminology, and the organization of the human body, which will provide the foundation for a thorough study of anatomy and physiology. The anatomy and physiology units will progressively explore the structure and function of the human body, culminating in a comprehensive understanding of how body systems work together to maintain health and respond to illness.

This one-semester course meets Idaho standards for CTE – Health Professions as well as General High School Health Standards. 

Fundamentals of Health Professions introduces you to the healthcare industry by providing the background required for many jobs in healthcare and a basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology. The course serves as the prerequisite for students planning to enter the CNA, basic EMT, pharmacy technology, or other health care programs. The skills learned in this course are transferable to many health occupations.

This is NOT a GEM course.
