Students will begin with an introduction to healthcare as well as healthcare roles and professional responsibilities, learning the foundational skills required to thrive in the field. Emphasis will be placed on effective communication, including cultural awareness, to enhance patient care in diverse settings. Students will examine wellness practices, safety protocols, and emergency preparedness to promote health and prevent harm. The course will also cover essential medical mathematics, terminology, and the organization of the human body, which will provide the foundation for a thorough study of anatomy and physiology. The anatomy and physiology units will progressively explore the structure and function of the human body, culminating in a comprehensive understanding of how body systems work together to maintain health and respond to illness.

This dual credit course includes required learning objectives established by the partner college. Instruction covers human biology, development, and reproduction, consistent with Idaho Code §33-1609, §33-1611A, and §33-1637. Because these objectives are required for college credit, students may not opt out of this content. Parents who do not wish their student to participate in instruction on these topics should not register the student for this dual credit course. An alternate high school course option will be available. This one-semester course meets Idaho standards for CTE – Health Professions as well as General High School Health Standards.

Fundamentals of Health Professions introduces you to the healthcare industry by providing the background required for many jobs in healthcare and a basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology. The course serves as the prerequisite for students planning to enter the CNA, basic EMT, pharmacy technology, or other health care programs.
