English 11A – FX

During this course, students have the opportunity to travel back in time and discover their American cultural heritage. The writings from each of the time periods studied reflect, respond to, or react against the society of the time. Each of the writers studied recorded his or her observations about the human experience during their lifetimes and left it to us as a legacy. What is an American? What beliefs do we as a country hold dear? What principles does our culture value? Students will have the opportunity to reflect on these and other questions as they explore the earliest American writings. The students will learn how to explore comparative elements and inform their opinions through causal chains. View full syllabus
