This course explores the theme of personal struggle by examining the works of American writers dealing with parental relationships, death, the challenges of teen life, and unrequited love. Readings will cover the last 150 years of American life through the literary movements of regionalism, psychological fiction, imagism, Harlem Renaissance, modernism, and postmodernism.
