German 1B

In German 1B, students will continue their language-learning journey by gaining a better
understanding of life in German-speaking countries. Students will research a
German-speaking country throughout the semester, and will present their findings at the
middle and end of the course. Students will learn vocabulary and basic phrases that will
enable them to communicate in various places and situations in German: talking about
climate and the environment, giving directions and discussing transportation in the city,
discussing food preferences and healthy choices, using good manners in a restaurant,
sharing information about German festivals and holidays, discussing at what age people
learn to drive and vote, describing a dream vacation and what clothing to pack,
discussing German politics and education, and learning to discuss and enjoy German
popular culture. The class takes a highly communicative approach and utilizes the 5 C’s
of language learning – communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and
communities. A heavy focus is put on German-speaking cultures around the world, with
grammar being learned indirectly through various activities. Throughout the 8 units,
students’ language learning is guided by Can Do statements which focus on specific
language abilities, such as “I can understand directions to a place nearby.” View full syllabus
