By Dani Leffler, IDLA Communication Specialist

From Idaho to the skies and soon overseas, Katherine Billman’s journey reflects independence, resilience, and a lifelong commitment to growth. A 2019 graduate of Middleton High School who completed her senior year online through IDLA, Katherine has pursued a path that blends service, personal development, and a passion for helping others.

Discovering IDLA and the Power of Flexibility

Katherine first heard about IDLA through her high school counselor. Needing flexibility to balance school, work, and personal responsibilities, she chose online classes to finish strong while still staying active in other interests, including competitive horse showing. “Doing my courses online allowed me the opportunity to pursue my passions as well as navigate being in different places with varying routines,” she explains.

Career Path: Service, Growth, and Exploration

After high school, Katherine pursued esthetician school, driven by a love for helping others feel confident in their own skin. “It was a trade and extra schooling that I could keep with me + a passion to help others see their beauty,” she says.

But her journey didn’t stop there. Inspired by a family history of service and a personal calling, Katherine enlisted in the Idaho Air National Guard. “Each ebb and flow has taught me new skills and helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect,” she says. Her military experience, paired with her IDLA foundation in independence and time management, has shaped the person she is today.

Overcoming Challenges

Katherine’s path has not been without challenges. “One of the hardest parts was balancing big transitions; family life, school, career, and military training. I overcame it by staying focused on my ‘why,’ leaning on discipline, and reminding myself that challenges are pivotal in growth,” she explains.

Building Independence and Lifelong Skills

Katherine says her experience with IDLA gave her a strong foundation in “self-discipline, accountability, and how to stay motivated without someone looking over my shoulder.” These habits became essential as she transitioned into her career. “Integrity first, service before self, excellence in all we do,” Katherine reflects values reinforced by the independence she developed during her online courses.

Managing her own learning also built confidence. She explains, “That foundation gave me the confidence to keep moving forward, no matter what direction life has taken and where the wind has blown me.” Whether navigating career changes, military service, or personal growth, the skills Katherine honed with IDLA have been a constant guide, helping her embrace new challenges and opportunities with resilience and determination.

Looking Ahead

Katherine is embracing a new chapter of learning and growth. She recently enrolled in a holistic health practitioner program, combining her passion for wellness with her desire to serve others. “I’m excited to learn more and continue to bring that knowledge into both my livelihood and future career,” she says.

Her upcoming move overseas to the UK marks another exciting adventure. Katherine looks forward to experiencing a new culture, meeting new people, and expanding her horizons in both personal and professional ways. Reflecting on her journey, she notes, “People fear change so much, but that’s how we grow and instill resilient roots.” For her, each step is an opportunity to grow, adapt, and continue building the life she envisions.

Advice to Students

“Don’t be afraid to try something new, even if it feels uncertain. Online learning can teach you independence and confidence, skills that will serve you long after high school. Make the most of your experience and show up authentically with your ‘why,’” she advises.

A Lasting Impact

Reflecting on her journey, Katherine emphasizes the role IDLA played in shaping her independence. “It was the first time I experienced true independence in learning. That foundation gave me the confidence to keep moving forward, no matter what direction life has taken and where the wind has blown me. The winds of change are very real, and I hope my story helps you know you’re doing a great job and you are capable!”
